
Summer in Portsmouth is the time to hit the decks. No, not literally!
Hitting the decks these days is an invitation to drink and dine in the scenic waterfront deck area overlooking the tugs and three bridges across the Piscataqua River to Maine.
The Athenaeum photo archive offers no explanatory caption for a series of images that are dated between 1920 and 1945. Could it this be devastation from the hurricane of 1938? If you have a clue what happened here, let me know. This “disaster” image follows shots of car, boat, airplane, train, and tanker wrecks in the seacoast region.
The Old Ferry Landing restaurant and deck is located at this very spot where the ferry once transported workers to the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard across the river. Before that, this was the Spring Market where women from Maine arrived in canoes and dories to sell their wares on the waterfront.
